Over the past several weeks, Macy, Rylie, and I have been in search of a new project to serve the community. We eventually developed the idea to host an adoption event in New Palestine - "Dragon's Pet Wagon." The event would incorporate sponsors from the New Palestine community, animal shelters near central Indiana, and vendors interested in selling pet items (handkerchiefs, toys, biscuits, etc.). Rylie, the Photoshop expert, went to work creating a template for a flier that would ultimately be used for advertisement throughout the community. At the same time, I messaged the office manager at the New Palestine Methodist Church inquiring about utilizing the church to host the event. Leah Everett responded promptly, informing me about the regulations and fees set by the church trustees. Next, Rylie, Macy, and I, with additional assistance from Luke and Alex, emailed multiple shelters around the Indianapolis area. Rylie messaged Frenzy Animal Rescue; Macy, the Nutty Mutt Bakery; Luke, the Hancock Humane Society; Alex, the Lucky Dog Retreat; and I emailed the Southside Animal Shelter. Currently, we have received replies from two shelters, the Southside Animal Shelter and the Hancock Humane Society. The Southside Animal Shelter responded with an unfortunate message, "I am sorry but we are not able to attend your event." Likewise, the Hancock Humane Society seemed hesitant to participate due to the limited amount of volunteers. The Hancock Humane Society also notified us that adopting a new pet requires several days/weeks of evaluation by the board at the HHS; therefore, same-day adoptions would be unrealistic. My group has decided to discontinue our pursuit of an adoption event in New Palestine; however, our brief experience with the organization of a pet adoption has been enlightening.
